MOQ Explained: Why Glass Manufacturers Set Minimum Order Quantities
"Why can't I just order 500 bottles?" It is the most common question new buyers ask — and the answer is not stubbornness. Minimum order quantities come directly from how glass is made. Once you understand the mechanics, you can work with MOQ instead of fighting it.
What MOQ actually means
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest run a factory will produce at a given price. Below that number, either the price rises steeply or the order is declined. It is not a sales tactic — it reflects the fixed cost of setting up a production run.
Why glass has higher MOQs than plastic
The furnace never stops
A glass furnace runs 24 hours a day for years. Shutting it down costs more than the factory would earn on a small order. Production is scheduled in long campaigns, and each changeover has a real cost.
Mould changes take time
Switching a bottle shape means changing moulds and re-tuning the line — typically several hours of downtime plus scrap while the machine stabilises. That cost has to be spread over enough units to make sense.
Decoration has its own minimums
- Screen printing — needs a plate and set-up; economical above roughly 3,000 pieces
- Spray coating — mixed in batches; a small batch costs nearly as much as a large one to prepare
- Hot stamping — a die must be made for every design
Packing and freight efficiency
Glass ships best in full cartons on palletised containers. Very small orders cost disproportionately to pack and are more likely to arrive damaged.

These are industry norms, not fixed rules — a good factory will often find a way for a serious buyer with a clear repeat order.
How MOQ affects unit price
Price falls in steps as quantity rises, because the fixed set-up cost is divided across more units:

Notice the big drop is between 1,000 and 5,000 — after that the curve flattens. Ordering twice your need rarely halves the price.
Five ways to lower your effective MOQ
- Use a stock mould — the single biggest lever. You give up shape uniqueness but can still customise with colour, frosting and printing.
- Choose a standard colour — flint, amber and cobalt are produced continuously; a bespoke Pantone needs its own batch.
- Simplify decoration — one-colour printing has lower minimums than multi-colour; labelling has none.
- Consolidate sizes — the same bottle in one colour across two sizes may count as one run; ask.
- Share a production slot — some factories will group your order with another customer's if timing allows.
When a higher MOQ is actually the right call
Fighting for the lowest possible quantity can cost you more in the long run:
- Unit price drops meaningfully at each tier — if you will reorder within six months, the larger first order is usually cheaper overall
- Consistency improves within a single production run (colour and dimensions vary slightly between campaigns)
- You avoid a second set-up fee and a second freight bill
The right question is not "how low can the MOQ go" but "what quantity gives me the best total cost over the next year".
What to ask your supplier
- What is the MOQ for the stock version versus a custom colour?
- Is the mould fee refundable once I reach a certain volume?
- Can I mix sizes or colours within one MOQ?
- What are the exact price breaks (1k / 5k / 10k / 50k)?
- Do samples count toward the MOQ if I proceed?
