Food contact is a different standard
A food jar is not simply a bottle with a different label. Everything that touches the product has to be suitable for food contact, which means the glass has to be free of lead and cadmium at the levels your market allows, and the lid lining has to be declared for the type of product you are filling. Acidic products such as tomato sauce, jam and pickles attack some linings; honey and dry spices are far more forgiving. Tell us what goes into the jar and we will quote the lining that suits it rather than a generic lid.
We can provide the food-contact documentation and material declarations your importer or retailer will ask for. If your customer requires a specific migration test or a BPA-free declaration, raise it at quotation stage; retrofitting paperwork after production is much slower than building it into the order.
Choosing between wide mouth and regular mouth
Wide-mouth jars (63 mm and above) are the right choice when the product is spooned or poured out — honey, jam, sauces, dry goods — and when the customer will reach into the jar. They also accept a larger lid, which is easier to grip and easier to seal reliably. Regular-mouth jars (38–53 mm) suit spices, samples and small-format honey, and they cost less because the closure is smaller.
Above 500 ml the mouth size starts to drive stability: a tall jar with a narrow mouth is easy to tip. If you are packing 770 ml or 1 litre, budget for a wide-mouth body and a lid that seals flat.
Honey, jam and the sealing problem
Honey and jam are the two products most likely to cause a complaint, for opposite reasons. Honey is viscous and crystallises, so the jar should be wide enough to reach into and the lid should come off without a fight once. Jam is filled hot, so the closure and the headspace have to be right for a vacuum seal — too little headspace and the jar will not seal, too much and the product darkens.
Both cases point to the same advice: agree the fill temperature, headspace and lid lining with us before the first production run, not after. It is a five-minute conversation that prevents a container of unsealed jars.
Decoration and retail presentation
Food jars sell on the label more than on the glass, but the glass shape still sets the price expectation. Ribbed and faceted bodies read as premium and hide minor scuffs; standard round bodies are the cheapest and take a wrap label cleanly; mason profiles signal home-made and preserve. Embossing on the shoulder or base is available on custom-mould quantities. For stock moulds the practical options are wrap labels, silk-screen printing and lid decoration — send us your artwork and we will confirm the printable area on the chosen body.

Are the lids airtight?
Yes. We supply lined metal twist-off lids that seal airtight on the matching jar. The correct lining depends on the product — acidic fillings such as tomato or pickles need a different lining from honey or dry spices — so tell us what you are filling and we will quote accordingly.
Can you provide food-contact documentation?
Yes. Food-contact and material declarations are available on request, including BPA-free statements for the lids and lead/cadmium declarations for the glass. Raise any specific test your retailer requires at quotation stage.
Which is better, wide mouth or regular mouth?
