Cured flower is a perishable agricultural product sold at premium prices — and relative humidity decides whether it reaches the customer as grown, or arrives dry, harsh and light. Packaging is the last line of defence between your curing room and the consumer. Here is how humidity, airtightness and humidity-control packs actually interact, and how to specify jars that hold the moisture your product needs.
Dried cannabis flower continues to exchange moisture with the air inside its container, every day, until the two reach equilibrium. That equilibrium point is the single most important environmental variable in your supply chain.
Below roughly 55% relative humidity, the flower keeps drying. Terpenes — the compounds that carry aroma and much of the price premium — are volatile and evaporate faster from dry material. Trichomes become brittle and shear off every time the jar is handled. The result is product that looks correct but smokes harsh and weighs less, which is a double loss: quality complaints and grams given away free.
Above roughly 65% relative humidity, you are growing something else entirely. Aspergillus and other moulds germinate readily above that threshold, and botrytis can develop invisibly inside dense buds before it shows on the surface. A mould failure at the retail level is not a quality complaint; it is a recall, a failed lab test and potentially a licence problem for your customer.

Most professional growers and packagers target 58–62%. The exact number is a branding decision as much as a safety one: drier reads as "craft cured" to some consumers, while 62% preserves the sticky texture other markets expect.
Relative humidity inside the jar and water activity (aw) in the bud are two views of the same moisture relationship. Flower equilibrated at 55–62% RH corresponds to a water activity of roughly 0.55–0.65, and several state testing regimes report exactly that figure. If your lab results come back above aw 0.65, the product will keep degrading — or worse — regardless of how good the packaging is. Packaging maintains a moisture state; it cannot rescue an out-of-spec one. Cure and dry first, then package.
Walk the product's real timeline: cure room, packaging line, distributor warehouse, dispensary back room, shelf, and finally the consumer's own storage for days or weeks after opening. From filling to purchase the flower may sit for one to three months, passing through warehouses and vehicles whose temperatures swing twenty degrees in a day.
Every temperature swing changes the equilibrium moisture point inside the package. A container that leaks air re-equilibrates with whatever environment it is in — a dry Arizona warehouse in one leg, a humid coastal summer in the next. An airtight container isolates the product from that lottery. Airtightness is not a premium feature; it is the mechanism that makes your target humidity a fact rather than a hope.

Static deserves a special mention for anyone moving from plastic to glass: plastic containers hold a static charge that physically pulls trichome heads off the flower. Glass does not. Buyers switching report the difference immediately in kief left on the container walls.
Airtightness is not a property of the glass — glass is always impermeable. It is a property of the seal where the cap meets the neck, and that seal is a system of three parts:
When a supplier says "airtight", the correct follow-up question is: what torque range, what liner, and can you show a test?
Two-way humidity packs (Boveda, Integra and similar) are salt-solution sachets that both absorb and release vapour, holding the jar at their rated humidity. They are cheap insurance and standard practice in premium flower, but they only work inside a container that already seals — a pack in a leaky jar simply humidifies the warehouse.

Size the pack to the jar volume as the manufacturer specifies, keep it out of direct contact with the flower (a holder or the space under the lid), and budget for replacement every two to three months once opened. Add the pack cost to your unit economics before quoting, not after.
