Why glass beats plastic for flower

Flower is a living product. It keeps respiring after harvest, and every gram of moisture or aroma that escapes through the container wall is value lost between your packaging line and the customer’s grinder. Plastic jars are permeable: humidity migrates through HDPE and PET, and the same plasticisers that make a jar squeezable can carry odour. Glass is chemically inert, dimensionally stable and completely impermeable, which is why premium flower programmes have moved almost entirely to glass over the last five years.

There is a commercial argument too. A glass jar with a child-resistant lid reads as a legitimate, tested, adult-use product. Plastic reads as budget. When shelf presence is the difference between a repeat purchase and a one-off, the unit-cost gap of a few cents rarely decides the order.

Choosing between 2 oz and 18 oz

The format has to fit the retail unit, not the shipping carton. Single-strain 3.5 g launches usually run in 2 oz or 3 oz; a 7 g flower jar sells better in 4 oz or 5 oz because the flower sits below the shoulder instead of pressing against the lid; 14 g and 28 g need the wider 8 oz to 18 oz bodies so the product does not bridge in the neck.

Wide-mouth bodies (63 mm and 70 mm) are worth the extra cost above 14 g. They let a budtender or a customer reach in without tipping the jar, and they accept a humidity pack without stealing flower space. Below 14 g, a 43–53 mm neck keeps the jar compact and the lid cheaper.

Glass colour and UV protection

Light degrades THC and oxidises terpenes. Clear flint glass shows the product best and is the right call if your packaging sits in a closed display case. Amber glass blocks the high-energy end of the visible spectrum without going fully opaque. Black and heavily UV-blocking glass gives the strongest protection and is the usual choice for programmes that ship through warm, bright climates or sit on open shelves.

All four finishes are available on the same moulds, so a colour change does not force a new tool. Frosting, silk-screen printing, hot-stamp foil and full-wrap labels can all be applied to the same body.

Closures, liners and child-resistance testing

Child resistance is a property of the combination, not of the cap alone. A 43 mm CR cap on our jar is not automatically compliant with a 43 mm CR cap from another supplier, and regulators treat it that way. Under 16 CFR 1700.20 the packaging must survive a senior-friendly access test and a panel of children; under ASTM D3475 the closure is classified by type and re-tested whenever the bottle, cap, liner or material changes.

What this means in practice: order your caps with your jars, ask for the test report covering the exact combination you buy, and keep that report on file with the SKU. If you sell into Canada as well, ISO 8317 is the reference standard and it is not identical to the US protocol — the same jar can pass one and fail the other. We supply the report per combination and can run a fresh test for a custom colour or liner.

Sizes, artwork and lead time

Stock moulds mean you can go from approved artwork to a shipped order without a mould cycle. Send us the label wrap or the screenprint file and we will confirm the safe print area for your chosen body before you commit — the curved shoulder is where most artwork gets clipped. MOQ is 1,000 pieces per size and colour, mixed sizes can be combined inside one container, and standard production runs 25–35 days after deposit.
