Why glass tubes are replacing plastic doob tubes

The plastic doob tube was a cost decision, and it is being reversed by the market. A clear glass tube shows the pre-roll, which turns an opaque pack into a visible product, and glass carries no smell the way a thin plastic wall does. Glass is also heavier and rigid, so a tube survives a pocket, a bag or a delivery run without the crushes and creases that ruin a cone.

The economics work because glass tubes are drawn on the same furnaces as our bottles, at the same order sizes. On a 10,000-piece run the gap between a glass and a plastic tube is small enough that brand perception decides it, not the price sheet.

Pop-top, screw or cork

Child-resistant pop-top is the default for retail flower programmes in regulated US states. It is a single-action closure that passes 16 CFR 1700.20 when tested with the matching tube, and it is what budtenders expect to see. Screw caps are cheaper and easier to automate on a filling line, but they are not child-resistant on their own — they suit markets without a CR mandate, or programmes that use an outer exit bag. Cork is the choice for boutique, hand-filled and hospitality gifting lines where the closure is part of the look.

Whatever you choose, buy the tube and the closure together. A CR pop-top tested on a 14 mm tube is not a valid compliance claim on a 16 mm tube.

Sizing the tube to the pre-roll

The rule of thumb is a tube 15–20% wider than the pre-roll and 5–10 mm longer than the finished cone, so the product does not rattle and the tip is not compressed by the cap. A standard 1 g pre-roll sits comfortably in a 14 mm tube around 90–100 mm long; infuseds and large cones need a 16 mm or 19 mm body. Multi-packs of two or three slim pre-rolls fit a 19 mm tube and are usually the cheapest way to hit a higher retail price point without going to a box.

Stock mould availability changes as furnaces switch runs, so confirm the exact diameter and length you need with our team before you lock your label artwork — the print area and the label radius both depend on the final tube.

Labelling and compliance notes

Tubes are the hardest package in the category to label well: the curve is tight and the surface area is small. The practical solutions are a short wrap label set to the tube radius, direct silk-screen printing for a premium feel, or a printed hang-tag. In CR-marketed states you will also need the standard warning panel and, in several jurisdictions, a residual-risk notice — allow roughly 30% of the tube circumference for the required text before you design the brand panel.
