Why beverage brands are moving back to glass

Glass is the only mainstream beverage container that is inert, resealable and genuinely reusable, and that combination is now a marketing asset rather than a cost. For cold brew, kombucha, cold-pressed juice and craft syrup, glass protects flavour in a way that a permeable plastic bottle cannot: no oxygen ingress over the shelf life, no flavour scalping, no plastic taste in a product whose whole selling point is that it tastes clean.

There is a practical argument too. A reusable glass bottle with a swing top or a screw cap turns a single-use purchase into a repeat format, and it photographs better for the social and DTC channels that most beverage brands live on.

Choosing the closure

The closure decides whether the product is shelf-stable or refrigerated, and how the customer drinks it. Screw caps are the most economical and the easiest to apply on a small filling line, and they reseal well. Crown caps are used for carbonated and sparkling products because they hold pressure, but they need a capping tool and they do not reseal. Swing tops are the premium reusable option and are common on kombucha and water. Cork is used for syrups, cordials and premium non-carbonated lines.

If your product is carbonated, tell us at quotation stage — the bottle wall thickness and the closure pressure rating both have to be matched, and not every stock mould is suitable.

Sizing and format decisions

The 100 ml to 250 ml mini bottle is the fastest-growing beverage format: it works as a shot, a sampler, a flight or a gift-set component, and it lets a brand hit a low price point without a plastic bottle. 330 ml to 500 ml is the standard single serve; 750 ml and 1000 ml are for shared, family and refill formats. Square bodies save shelf and carton space, which matters more than it sounds once you are paying for pallet space.

One practical tip: standardise on one or two base bodies across the range and differentiate with glass colour, closure and label. It cuts your unit cost, your carton count and the number of parts you have to warehouse.

Food safety, packing and reuse

Beverage bottles are direct food-contact packaging, so the glass must meet lead and cadmium limits for your market and the closure lining must suit the product — acidic juice, hot-fill syrup and carbonated kombucha each need a different lining. We supply food-contact and material declarations on request. For shipping, bottles travel with an inner partition and a properly sized carton; for hot-fill or pasteurised products, confirm the fill temperature with us so the glass and the closure are specified correctly.
